Thinning

< prev next >

There are normally three reasons for thinning a tree.

  1. Improve visibility. Many times the tree can be thinned in such a manner to make it possible to see through instead of removing the tree.

  2. Prevent wind damage. When a tree is excessively thick, wind has a tendency to blow against the tree pushing against it rather than blowing through the tree. Thinning reduces the change of wind damage.

  3. Promote healthy growth. Young trees especially have a tendency to grow thick close to the main trunk area. When this happens, you will have many limbs rubbing against each other and growing across one another. Whether the tree in question is large or small, it is always best to minimize contact between branches.
